HUMANITY OF HOMELESSNESS

Originally from Maryland, Loko has faced homelessness on and off since he was 17. Despite those challenges, he graduated on time with a diploma from Roberts High School.  His journey has included some back and forths, but he remains determined to build a better life.

Loko's primary motivation is to create a stable and positive environment for his kid, ensuring they have opportunities to succeed. He acknowledges regret on the path he has walked, but takes pride in becoming stronger than he ever imagined. The support from his family and friends has been invaluable, reminding him that family is not just who you are born with but who you build relationships with along the way.

Fiona, a Youth Mentor at the Young Adult Site, shared this: "Loko is a great communicator and is such an entertaining storyteller! He watches out for other residents and loves making people smile. He also keeps a really tidy pod. He even had an idea to start a club here that coaches people on cleaning."

Through all of his life experiences, Loko shares that he realizes there is still much to live for. With a renewed sense of purpose, he is set to begin welding classes at Chemeketa next week, hoping to forge a successful career. "I’m young and I have time to find what that is. Next week I start taking classes for welding. I hope to get a great career out of it."

We are grateful to walk alongside Loko on this journey and it's a privilege to watch him make steps toward a better future!
